One construction worker is in critical condition and two more suffered serious injuries after they were crushed by around 1,000 pounds of rebar Thursday afternoon in a construction accident on the West S
A row of rebar support beams about 20 yards long came crashing down on the workers around 2:35 p.m. at their Texas Department of Transportation work site near Loop 410 and U.S. 90.
Police said the workers had been tying the rebar together, forming a support structure which would be lifted atop a pillar on which a new access road from Loop 410 to westbound U.S. 90. will be built.
As they were tying the rebar together, one of the beams suspending the rebar in the air tipped over, "causing the whole thing to go down," said San Antonio Police Sgt. Mark Hubbard.
One of the workers, who was in his late-20s, was fully trapped under the rebar. He suffered multiple broken bones and serious head trauma, police said. Paramedics took him to University Hospital in critical condition.
Two other workers were injured as well. They were taken to University Hospital in serious condition.
Hubbard said OSHA will conduct an investigation at the construction site and the police department will conduct its own inquiry as well. The incident is currently being treated as an accident.
